Blackout vs Sheer Curtains: What's the Difference?

It's one of the first questions we ask on every measurement visit: blackout or sheer? They sound like two ends of the same spectrum, but really they're two different tools doing two different jobs. Understanding what each one actually does makes the decision a lot easier.

What Blackout Curtains Do

Blackout fabric is woven or lined to block light almost completely. Beyond darkness, a good blackout curtain also helps with insulation — keeping rooms cooler during Lagos afternoons and reducing outside noise. It's the natural choice for bedrooms, home cinemas, and any room where you want full control over light and privacy after dark.

The trade-off is exactly what you'd expect: blackout curtains block light in both directions. Close them during the day and the room goes dim, which is great for sleep but not ideal if you want a bright, open living space.

What Sheer Curtains Do

Sheers are the opposite instinct — light, airy fabrics like voile or lace that let daylight filter through while still offering a degree of privacy from outside. They soften harsh sunlight, diffuse it into something gentler, and give a room a finished, styled look even with the windows fully covered.

What sheers don't do is block light or give you real night-time privacy on their own. On a well-lit street, a sheer curtain alone won't stop people seeing in once your lights are on after dark.

Why Not Both?

This is genuinely the most popular setup we install, and for good reason. A sheer layer sits closest to the window, with a heavier blackout or light-filtering curtain layered in front. During the day, you draw back the heavy curtain and let the sheer do the work — soft light, full privacy, elegant look. At night, you close both for complete darkness and privacy.

It also just looks considered. A single flat curtain can feel a little plain; a layered sheer-and-curtain combination has depth and movement, and it reads as a properly styled window rather than an afterthought.

A Simple Way to Decide
