5 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Curtains

Curtains don't announce when they're worn out the way a broken appliance does. They just quietly stop doing their job as well as they used to — and because you see them every day, it's easy not to notice. Here's what to actually look for.

1. The Colour Has Faded Unevenly

Sun exposure fades fabric from the inside out, so the side facing the window often looks noticeably lighter or duller than the rest. Once you see that difference, it tends to only get more obvious — and no amount of washing fixes it.

2. The Fabric Sags or Won't Hold Its Shape

Curtains stretch over time, especially heavier fabrics carrying their own weight for years. If your curtains look loose, don't fall in a clean line anymore, or sit unevenly along the bottom, the fabric has lost its structure.

3. There's a Musty Smell, Even After Cleaning

Humidity is a real factor in Lagos homes, and curtains absorb moisture from the air over the years. A persistent musty smell that doesn't lift after washing usually means the fibres themselves have been affected — that's a sign to replace, not just clean.

4. The Hardware Is Failing

Hooks pulling through the fabric, rings that no longer glide, a track that jams — these are mechanical problems, and they tend to get worse, not better. If you're wrestling with your curtains every time you open or close them, it's usually cheaper in the long run to replace than to keep patching.

5. The Room Has Changed, But the Curtains Haven't

This one isn't about wear at all. If you've repainted, changed the furniture, or simply outgrown a colour scheme from years ago, curtains that once matched perfectly can now be the one thing holding a room back. Sometimes replacing them is less about damage and more about finally finishing the room.
